Breglia is the highest and northest hamlet (797 m) next to S. Abbondio's territory. An autonomous municipality until 1928, it has been an important centre in the past because the upper part of the ancient Via Regina, descending towards S. Maria Rezzonico, passed there and is certainly one of the most ancient villages of all the territory. There, they have found the mysterious and still indecipherable "coppelle" and a Roman tomb dating back to the VIth c. In the parish church of S. Gregorio Magno, rebuilt in 1873, there are some objects coming from the former building (XVIth c.) while in the better known Sanctuary of Madonna di Breglia there is a statue of the Virgin Mary which has been venerated for more than two centuries. In Breglia was born Gaspare Molo, the "Lombard Cellini" and lived for a long time Gianpietro Lucini, the poet.
